Prospect Burma invests in a positive future for Burma (Myanmar) through its young people. We give underprivileged Burmese students, from all ethnic and religious backgrounds, access to a University education. Our scholarship programme opens doors to educational opportunities currently unavailable and underfunded within Burma. We provide over 100 partial scholarships annually to students studying subjects vital to the rebuilding of civil society in Burma.
Burma is one of the world's poorest countries and was under military rule for over 60 years. This resulted in the collapse of the education and health sectors. Higher education institutions have particularly suffered with major periods of closures. Although Burma is now transitioning to civilian rule, government spending on education remains one of the lowest in Southeast Asia and it will take years to raise educational standards.
Through access to an education that is unavailable and underfunded within their home country, 100 Burmese students will be provided with the knowledge, thinking skills and behaviours to participate in activities and employment that will further their own development and that of their home country. All of our students are committed to returning to Burma and we support study in areas which have been identified as essential for Burma's development and that of their communities.
Our scholarship programme aims to give over 100 Burmese students essential support for higher education each year. As previous scholars funded through Prospect Burma have demonstrated, the vital skills and knowledge these scholars receive will go on to support the development needs in their Burmese communities and further the democratic process within Burma.
