This project will pay for tuition and meals for 300 girls in high school in Nakuru, Kenya for one term and provide them with an opportunity to access high school education. Costs for high school education in Kenya are very high and almost prohibitive for girls from poor families.
Rhonda is one of the slum areas within Nakuru town and has an estimated population of 50,000 school age children. This is a very needy area with families living in a settlement with makeshift housing and lack many physical infrastructure and social amenities, including pipe borne water. Of the 10,000 girls who graduate from primary school every year, 90% are unable to proceed with high school education due to high fees required and the unavailability of regular income from the poor families.
The project will provide an opportunity to the deserving children who yearn to be in school but have lost hope due to the state of poverty within their families. School fees to selected secondary schools will be paid for the identified children to attend classes without interruptions. Follow up with the schools will be made frequently to ensure regular class attendance of the children.
A stable mother guarantees a stable family and will ensure improved living standards for the family. Providing girls with high education will help in creating new employment opportunities and reduce the high poverty levels currently being experienced within these communities. Education gained will help them become self-sustaining. There will be an increase in family incomes and these will increase the standard of living for the entire community, leading to reduction in poverty.
