On 9/8/2023, a massive earthquake struck Marrakech & the High Atlas with deadly force. We are committed to providing immediate & long-term support to alleviate immense suffering & restore resilience of rural communities where we have worked for 10+ years, including at Dar Taliba. Our hearts ache for our team & communities who have lost family & seen their homes reduced to rubble. These villages are among the most marginalised & remote in Morocco. Please help us to provide relief & rebuild.
The earthquake was the strongest to hit central Morocco in more than a century. We are approaching 3,000 lives lost & countless homes & buildings destroyed. Displaced people in High Atlas communities need urgent assistance including clothing, food, shelter & water. Coupled with the loss of their loved ones & belongings, they now also face challenges in accessing drinking water, food & basic supplies. Over the long term, these communities will need to rebuild their lives & livelihoods.
After immediate relief efforts, we have been supporting local communities by: 1. Rebuilding schools, toilets, irrigation pathways & other necessities 2. Restoring livestock, seeds & other essentials for livelihoods providing short and long term medical, social, food and shelter related support 3. Creating a digital platform for earthquake response data consolidation & mapping 4. Restoring cultural heritage such as water mills destroyed in the earthquake
GDF has supported the resilience of traditional livelihoods in the High Atlas for over a decade. We are now using these funds to help families re-establish their traditional ways of living & working. Our approach is community-led, and prioritises people's pressing needs to ensure that their lives & livelihoods remain resilient & are rehabilitated as soon as possible. Our work in this arena has recently been recognised with a Humanitarian Medal by King Charles III.
