Preventing Type 2 Diabetes with Health Literacy

Hello Everyone,

Many thanks to everyone who supported our Holiday Health Campaign!

In the last six months, we have focused on how best to share our programs with the HHP community. Up to now, all of our activities have been online with over 1.7 million visits to our website. In the second half of 2023, we will add in person activities with the launch of our peer led Patient Advocacy Workshops program, “Understanding the Healthcare System in Los Angeles” and in “Northern Ireland” (which we piloted in Northern Ireland in 2022 with excellent outcomes for the participants) now with a combination of in person and online workshops along with follow up support and resources to individual patients helping to improve their understanding of the health care system and how to advocate for themselves and their families. All materials are at a reading age of nine. The workshop, includes modules: 

• “Understanding the Language of Health (Health Literacy)” 
• “Your Rights as a Patient”
• “How to Stand up for Yourself and Be Heard and the ePatient” 
• “How to Research Online as a Patient” 
• “Where to Get Help in your City, Town” 
• Followed by a Q&A.

The workshops consist of a facilitated discussion about topics covered by the workshop presentation and otherwise, in a setting that allows for participants to share their stories, experiences, and what has and hasn't worked for them. This creates a community for people to rely on and go back to after the workshop is completed.

Workshop follow up includes:

• An phone number and email address which can be reached with questions
• An email newsletter with a sample video and text copy of the workshop and answers to questions unanswered in it
• A monthly newsletter with information on the workshops and other resources available to the HHP community 
• "Train the Trainer" workshops to suitable workshop attendees, trained to give the program with follow up support including meetups in their local communities, supported by HHP on an ongoing basis 
• HHP Patient education video courses from the HHP Learning Academy
• HHP Online Peer to Peer Panel Events set up by the HHP Online Events Team. Similarly, to the workshops, the Peer to Peer Online Panels, follow topics in a setting that allows for patients to share their stories, experiences.

Our Summer Health Campaign will take place in the months of June and July. I will share information on it with you in the coming weeks.
