Challenge

Coping with being ill, frightened and overwhelmed, finding a diagnosis, living in the twilight zone, feeling lost and lonely, not knowing who to turn to or how to pay all the rising bills. These are the challenges confronting people who find themselves in a health crisis too often desperate for answers. HHP has a small core team and more than 100 volunteers. We help people grow their health literacy, resilience and confidence to keep going and learn how to best manage their health.

Solution

People with low health literacy, compared with the general population are 1.5 to 3 times more likely to experience increased hospitalization or death. HHP increases health literacy through in person and online patient advocacy workshops with follow up support and resources to individual patients helping to improve their understanding of the health care system and how to advocate for themselves and their families. All materials are at a reading age of nine and in local languages.

Long-Term Impact

Over 1.7 million people from over 230 countries have visited the HHP website and received significant information on their health issues. Over 13,000 people have taken the HHP Migraine survey. Outcomes: After viewing the migraine survey data, respondents who reported their understanding of migraine headaches as excellent, very good, or good increased by almost 20%. HHP provided pilot peer advocacy training to 100+ people in 2022 with 1,000+ planned in 2023/2024 and1million+ from 2025.
