For a country where 82% of people rely on firewood for preparing their daily meal, there is a huge pressure in the nearby forest and natural resources. Hence, in order to prevent the forest and natural resources, frequent plantation and its protection is an important activity to undertake. But, with the strike of Earthquake in April in Nepal, damaging & destroying residence of above 7 million people’s houses and institutional buildings, there is a high pressure being created in the surrounding nature and natural resources. Hence in order to prevent the possible environmental catastrophes, preventive measures like awareness and actions were initiated by ECCA.
A 3 day’s long “Conservation through Life Skill Activities Camp” was organized from 4th to 6th August 2015 in 5 different schools in Sindhupalchok District, which is one of the most earthquake affected areas in Nepal. The camp focused to aware children and student about the need of conservation through various activities like games and sessions. The sessions included sessions related with conservation education, WASH, Safe Water practices, Chlorine Uses, Leadership and Conservation games etc. On the 6th of August, a massive plantation program was organized with the involvement of 28 Youths volunteers from ECCA and 831 students from all the schools. A total of 1150 plants of various species – Juniperus Indica, Cinnamomim Camphora, Choerospondias Axillaris and Margosa were planted in various landslide areas, road side areas and open spaces around the school area.
All the students and volunteers from ECCA seemed very energetic towards the activities organized in the school and the community. The teachers expressed that the camp and plantation program organized were highly effective towards reducing the trauma among children and to preserve the surround nature and natural resources.
