Calling upon more solidarity for the survivors of the flooding in Kinshasa the Capital City of the Democratic Republic of Congo
DRC is one among the top placed countries, actually the first in the world currently with the highest number of internally displaced persons, but also the most forgotten country in the world and the most unknown, ignored and where it is difficult to access easily information.
Among the more than 10 million Internally Displaced Persons current we have those who are survivors of flooding, fire break out, and landslide among others, which are also now added to the millions of victims of wars.
When such situations that pushed them to leave their homes, the reactions are almost the same: Sporadic urgent relief aid in the first month either from the Government or from some humanitarian organizations and the story ends from there. In the process the victims will never be considered for recovery, they remain with only one option which is languish in their internally displaced person’s camps without help.
Poverty is the first thing to address
The victims of Kinshasa flooding are facing the same treatment, it is now two years that they lost everything and are now left in IDP camps where they continue to sink into destitution slowly by slowly.
Bearing in our minds that DRC has better opportunities for people to recover quickly from the shock which unfortunately remain untouched, we have proposed to put in place the response approach which is based on reducing poverty among the survivors because as we keep on saying, there is a clear relation between poverty and life in IDP camps, most of those living in IDP Camps are too poor and the solution is to empower them to challenge poverty, once that is done many will leave the IDP Camps.
However we have not yet succeeded to mobilize the necessary financial contributions we need during our fundraising. For the last almost one year this project has not received any funding, which has exposed people to more problems.
It is also important to plan for the prevention and more activities should also put in this way if we have the necessary funding to come up with projects that can address the gaps.
In short
We still believe that the solution to the survivors of the flooding in Kinshasa is through economic empowerment, in which each survivor is given some money to start income generating activity which will help him/her to solve the basic needs.
This is why we re-echo appeal once again to people of goodwill to continue supporting so that we can improve the situation.
