Help Women Learn to Read and Write in Uganda

At 50 years old, Jessy has proven that it’s never too late to learn. A mother of five and a dedicated farmer from Amuru District, Jessy recently completed our adult literacy training program. Before joining the program, she struggled to read simple signs, write her name, or keep track of her savings from the small market stall she runs.

Through hard work and determination, Jessy not only learned to read and write, but also gained confidence in public speaking and handling basic financial records. She now reads the Bible with her church group, helps her children with their homework, and keeps a daily record of her business transactions.

“Before, I had to rely on others even for simple things. Now I feel proud and independent,” Jessy shared with a smile.

Jessy’s story reminds us that empowering women with literacy skills transforms families and strengthens communities. We are proud of her achievements and excited for what lies ahead in her journey.

Literacy is more than the ability to read and write—it is a cornerstone of empowerment, especially for marginalized women in Northern Uganda. For women like Margret, literacy has opened the door to social and economic opportunities that were once out of reach.

Through our recent literacy and numeracy training program, 240 women graduated with the skills needed to support their families and grow their businesses. These women are now better equipped to manage their finances, keep accurate business records, and engage confidently in their communities.

Margret, one of the graduates, shared her story:
"Before this training, I couldn’t understand how to track my income or expenses. Now, I can calculate my profits and even plan for future investments. I feel empowered and ready to expand my small business."

This project has not only boosted economic independence but also fostered a sense of dignity and self-worth among the participants. Literacy empowers women to take control of their lives, contribute to their communities, and break the cycle of poverty.
