The Hens Are Laying Eggs!

By Caryn Maxim | Director

400 New Hens in their Hen House
400 New Hens in their Hen House

400 hens arrived March 26th and began adjusting to their new homes. (And the women began adjusting to their new responsibilities.) A few of the hens were already laying eggs! Normally it takes a couple of weeks or so before they are laying eggs. During the past few months the number of eggs laid each day has been increasing, and by the beginning of July 95% of the hens were laying eggs everyday! The women are adjusting to their new responsiblities. Each day the woman who is collecting eggs is the person selling the eggs and the seven women rotate their days of work.

Only two of the women had prior experience with hens, so there is lots of learning going on. They are also learning how to keep track of the data they need to manage their business. In addition to tracking the number of eggs that are laid each day and the number of full cartons of eggs that they sell each day, they have to figure out how to set aside funds for the next purchase of feed, along with the replacement of the hens when they stop "paying for their feed". As hens grow older their eggs grow larger but less frequent. At one point they will not be able to lay enough eggs to pay for their feed and will be sold (for soup...).

Thank you for your support, please remember that the women plan to purchase a new set of hens to fill their second hen house. $11 purchases a hen!
