The Hens Are Coming!

By Caryn Maxim | Director

Even though we didn't receive enough donations to meet the project goal to start with 500 hens, the women analyzed what they had, and mindful of their own capital contributions, they ordered 400 hens instead of their goal of 500 hens.

They started off enthusiastically with cleaning out the first hen house and the grounds (the project has  been dormant for nearly 2 years). They hired the workers to make the necessary repairs to the beams and the roofing. They are purchasing the feeders and waterers they will need and cleaning out the nesting boxes. They have contracted for the chicken feed.

The women left their purchase deposit with the farm where they are buying their hens. They are buying hens that are around 16 weeks old that will start laying eggs at 18 weeks. That gives the hens two weeks to adapt to their new home. However, since they are not laying eggs during this time, this is the investment in feed that is necessary before the money earned from selling their eggs pays for their feed.

400 young hens will be arriving the week of March 24th and the women are ready to begin.

Thank you all for your donations and please remember the women need to raise funds for Phase 2, to fill the second hen house.

Gracias,

Caryn Maxim
