In our fieldwork, we have discovered stories of anguish and resilience, and we have seen the struggle between corruption and the fight for justice. We launched The InSight Crime Podcast: From the ground up, to provide a platform for the voices of those directly affected by organized crime in Latin America and the Caribbean. With this project, we seek to fund our second season in order to tell more stories, enriching the debate around organized crime and citizen security in the region.
Organized crime is the main threat to the well-being, security, and peace of those who live in Latin America. Many stories from our field trips, which are the backbone of our research, have remained on the cutting room floor because they didn't fit the format of our written reports, investigations, and news analysis.
We want to tell stories that go beyond those of famous kingpins and Netflix-style military mega-operations. Hollywood tends to glamorize the crimes that rob Latin Americans of the fundamental right of being able to live without the constant threat of violence. With our podcast, we would like to tell stories that reveal the day-to-day life of a region that has two hearts beating at the same time: crime and hope.
This podcast will give people a voice. The podcast is a space for community leaders, victims, civil society representatives, and activists to share their stories and how organized crime has impacted them. It also helps us achieve our mission by bringing organized crime research to new audiences. By using storytelling and narrative techniques, we can increase awareness of how this topic has a direct impact on citizen security and the daily lives of everyone in Latin America.
