Dear all,
We are delighted to share with you the successful completion of our workshops in Ponta do Ouro, Mozambique. This transformative project, which took a year to plan, organise and facilitate, would not have been possible without your generous support and encouragement. Thanks to you, the community at Lwandi Surf is now well on its way to being 'Surf Sufficient.'
Empowering the Community with Skills and Sustainability
Through your contributions, Lwandi Surf in Ponta do Ouro now boasts a fully functioning workshop, equipped with the necessary tools and resources for future surfboard shaping and repair sessions. This achievement marks a significant milestone for the community, ensuring that the skills imparted during the workshops can be sustained and passed on to others.
Cross-Continental Collaboration and Knowledge Transfer
The project also fostered meaningful collaborations across continents. Manuel from Manu Shapes, based in Tofo, Inhambane Province, Mozambique, joined us as a key participant. Manuel's journey with Vanderful began in 2019 at our first workshop in Tofo. Over the years, he has grown into a skilled surfboard shaper. Through this project, Manuel had the opportunity to learn the innovative 'sandwich construction' technique from our collaborator Sergi from @FlamaCircular in Barcelona, Spain. This method, which involves upcycling broken surfboards and using natural materials like wood, eliminates the need for plastics such as epoxy, thereby promoting sustainability in the surfing industry.
Hands-On Learning and Sustainable Practices
30 participants from Lwandi Surf engaged in a variety of hands-on learning experiences during the workshops. They acquired valuable skills in fixing and upcycling broken surfboards, hand-making wooden Alaia surfboards, and crafting sandwich construction surfboards. These techniques emphasise the use of natural materials and sustainable practices, contributing to environmental preservation and the reduction of waste.
Project Completion and Next Steps
We extend our deepest gratitude to all our donors, supporters, and collaborators. Your support has turned the vision of being 'Surf Sufficient' into a reality, empowering a community and fostering a culture of sustainability within the surfing industry. As we celebrate the successful completion of this project, we also wish to inform you that we will be retiring our GlobalGiving project page. This decision reflects the fulfillment of our goals for this initiative. Moving forward, we will continue to share updates and stories from Ponta do Ouro and our future projects through our social media platforms (@vanderful_adventures) and websites (vanderful.org / seedsofhope.eu).
Thank you once again for your invaluable support having made lasting impact on the community of Lwandi Surf and the broader surfing industry in Mozambique.
We look forward to your continued engagement and support in our future endeavours.
With gratitude,
The Vanderful / Seeds of Hope ODV Team
