FGM/C is the removal or injury to a girl's external genitals, usually practiced before a girl turns 10, more commonly in Africa and Asia. Every 12 minutes a girl dies from the practice. FGM/C is a violation of human rights and a form of gender-based violence that can bring severe and life-long physical and mental health impacts. Today, 12% of women globally are living with the consequences of being cut.
FGM/C can lead to a lifetime of chronic infections, mental health issues, and poor reproductive health. Women who have undergone FGM/C are twice as likely to die in childbirth and deliver a stillborn baby.
Orchid Project works to achieve our vision of a world free of FGM/C through: 1. RESEARCH: Generating research and evidence of what works to end FGM/C to better-equip those working to end it 2. MOVEMENT BUILDING: Supporting local organisations to unite under strong, locally-led regional Networks where they can influence change through joint advocacy and campaigns. 3. ADVOCACY: Influencing global and regional policies, actions and funding towards ending FGM/C
We are confident that understanding what works to end FGM/C, strengthening local organisations, and putting pressure on goverements is the key to protecting millions of girls from this practice.
