Empowering Women Through Football in Colombia

The Pacific region of Colombia, home to many Afro-Colombian and Indigenous communities, remains among Colombia most conflict-affected areas. Armed groups continue to recruit children and young people, while violence and poverty leave children and young people with few safe spaces or prospects for the future.

This project harnesses the power of football to empower girls and young women, advance gender equality, and build socio-emotional skills in a traditionally male-dominated setting.

In partnership with Fútbol Pazífico, we are driving long-term efforts that promote peacebuilding, social integration, and community leadership - empowering young people to choose hope over violence.

To reach its target group, the territorial technical team used multiple outreach strategies, including WhatsApp materials, radio broadcasts on the National Radio Station, and direct promotion in two schools (Max Seidel and Tumaco Naval). However, persistent beliefs that confine women to caregiving roles, view football as male-only, and a lack of parental support have prevented the project from meeting its full target. In response, two community forums were held to promote female empowerment in football, challenge stereotypes, and encourage critical reflection on gender roles. Some of the activities of the project include: 

1. “My Inner Universe and Its Outer Glow” workshops

Using emotional body mapping, participants explored the link between emotions and their
bodies, learning to identify and name feelings such as fear, joy, or calm. This strengthened
self-awareness, improved self-image, and built confidence to express personal experiences
openly.

2. Menstrual health and “The Natural Flow of Menstruation” sessions

Through games, reflection, and dialogue, girls challenged cultural stereotypes around menstruation and gender roles, recognizing how these beliefs affect their goals. This encouraged them to view their bodies with respect and to make informed decisions about their futures.

3. Football training with values-based activities

Football training combined skill-building. In “guide game” drills, players were blindfolded and guided by teammates, fostering respect, empathy, and teamwork.

We’re writing to you with full hearts and deep gratitude. Thanks to your support, something extraordinary is taking root on Colombia’s Pacific Coast — a region rich in culture and resilience, yet deeply affected by violence, inequality, and neglect.

In December 2024, we launched a new initiative focused on young girls and adolescents — those most at risk, and too often forgotten.

Over the course of this year-long project, girls are being directly supported through a powerful blend of psychosocial care, sports training, and peacebuilding education. Their families and wider communities — hundreds more — will feel the ripple effects of this work.

Why girls?
Because when we invest in girls, we invest in entire communities.
Because girls here face not only the trauma of conflict, but the daily reality of gender-based violence, limited access to education, and a society that too often tells them they are less.

But not anymore.
Not with you by their side.

Already, we are seeing change. Girls find courage through team sports and trauma-informed workshops, while others are learning their rights for the first time — and how to advocate for themselves and one another. These are safe spaces where healing begins, confidence grows, and futures are rewritten.

This project is more than just programming — it's a commitment to gender equality, dignity, and lasting peace.
