Thank you for supporting the Children’s Burns Unit at Whisper Hospital. Your generosity continues to save the lives of vulnerable children suffering from severe burn injuries and brings hope to families who are unable to afford specialized medical care.
Burn injuries remain one of the leading causes of preventable childhood injuries in Uganda. According to the World Health Organization, children in low-resource communities are highly vulnerable to burns caused by hot water, open cooking fires, charcoal stoves, and unsafe household environments. At our hospital, many children are admitted with severe burns that require urgent and specialized treatment.
Burn care is among the most expensive forms of treatment because it involves continuous dressing and re-dressing using sterile single-use materials such as sterile cotton wool, gauze, and bandages. Children with severe burns are also highly vulnerable to infections and often require antibiotics, antiseptics, nutritional support, prolonged hospitalization, skin grafting, and reconstructive surgery.
The Burns Unit continues to face a growing need for essential medical supplies including sterile cotton wool, antibiotics, gauze, burn creams, antiseptics, surgical gloves, pain medication, intravenous fluids, and support for grafting procedures. Many of the children admitted come from financially vulnerable families and are often brought in by neighbors or good Samaritans. In many cases, parents are unable to meet the full cost of treatment, yet the hospital continues to provide subsidized care to ensure that every child receives lifesaving treatment and proper follow-up care.
In addition to treatment, the hospital remains committed to educating caregivers and communities on burn prevention, hygiene, and child safety practices in order to reduce preventable burn injuries. Through continuous sensitization and awareness programs, many families are learning how to create safer home environments for children.
Because of your continued support, many children are receiving lifesaving treatment, infection prevention care, essential medical supplies, and hope for recovery. We remain deeply grateful for your generosity and commitment to helping restore the lives of children affected by severe burns in Uganda.
