Today, youth make up 16% of the world’s population, the largest ever in history. Children around the world experience extreme poverty.
Children in Washington DC make up 21% of the Districts population, 26% of DC’s youth experience poverty and 7.4% of these children are homeless. A 2016 Point-in-Time Count of Homeless Persons in DC found that there were 2,732 homeless children in Washington DC on a single night. Unfortunately this is an increase of 32.9% over the 2015 Count of 2,056.
With a rise in DC homeless, the UPO Shelter Hotline vans transport thousands of homeless people on the streets of DC each year to shelters during periods of extremely frigid winter cold and to cooling centers during periods of oppressive summer heat.
Please help us raise money for comfort items for the homeless we assist, from feminine items to water, cold beverages, ponchos, tarps socks and care packages for the children.
UPO's mission is Uniting People with Opportunities. As the designated community action agency for DC, UPO serves DC homeless through our programs. The UPO’s Office of Early Learning provides children of homeless families with free education and family support.
