Help UPO Help the DC Homeless

Despite the fact that Labor Day was 2 weeks ago and the first day of fall is in 3 days-time on Thursday September 22, 2016, we have continued to have several days during the past few weeks that the DC Government has activated the DISTRICT HEAT EMERGENCY PLAN! Heat waves are becoming more intense, and it’s staying hot for longer periods of time. Remarkably, the hottest four summers on record dating back to 1872 have occurred since 2010 if you include 2016 (Washington Post 8/26/16). The intense heat placed the DC Homeless at risk of heat related illness and death caused by prolonged exposure to oppressive heat with temperatures above 95 degrees (factoring in the heat index).

Eight months ago in January 2016, at the height of severe an icy winter in DC, a giant storm dumped 30” of snow in 36 hours and played havoc on all in the area, but was especially harsh on the DC Homeless population. UPO Shelter Hotline worked tirelessly before, during and after the blizzard answering 2,784 calls from folks needing help and transported 2,111 people to shelters.

UPO’s Shelter Hotline has been available 24 hours a day 7 days a week transporting the DC Homeless to cooling centers in the heat of summer and to shelters in the frigid winter temperatures, assisting those who are out on the street by providing an array of comfort items: water, beverages, food trays, suitable clothing and protective gear that we have had available in ample supply for distribution through the generosity of your donations.

Thank you for your generous support of our Help UPO Help the DC Homeless project, your 173 donations has propelled us to our Goal of $12,000! With your help UPO achieved the Rewards status of Superstar on Global Giving.
