Applause and celebration filled the room as UPO Foster Grandparent Mary Hawkins was honored with the Volunteer of the Year Award at Catholic Charities’ Kennedy Institute for her outstanding dedication and compassionate service to children. (UPO Foster Grandparents mentor children in classrooms throughout Washington, DC.)
Through her warm spirit, patience, and daily encouragement, Hawkins has become a cherished presence in the lives of the children she supports, offering comfort, mentorship, and positivity that extends far beyond the classroom. Staff members and teachers praised her unwavering commitment and the meaningful connections she builds with each child, noting that her kindness and gentle guidance help children feel seen, valued, and confident.
During the award presentation, Hawkins was celebrated by colleagues, community members, and program staff who expressed their gratitude for the love and care she brings every day. Her recognition as Volunteer of the Year reflects her years of faithful service and the lasting impact she continues to make in the Kennedy Institute community.
Note about the photo: “Caritas” is a Latin word for charity or selfless love, and Mary Hawkins embodies this virtue!
