By Vanessa Austin | Program Director, Permanent Supportive Housing
Shoquita’s journey is a testament to the power of resilience and determination in overcoming life's greatest challenges. Three years ago, she joined UPO's Permanent Supportive Housing (PSH) program, which offers wraparound services for people emerging from homelessness. The intent is to help them get homes and achieve the greatest possible independence and quality of life.
Struggling with chronic homelessness and grappling with severe anxiety and PTSD, Shoquita faced numerous obstacles that hindered her ability to secure stable employment and housing.
However, amidst the darkness, a beacon of hope emerged when Shoquita was granted an apartment through UPO's PSH. Yet even this milestone was threatened when she found herself on the brink of eviction due to mounting rent arrears totaling $5000.
Refusing to succumb to despair, Shoquita decided to turn her life around. With unwavering determination, she embarked on a journey of self-improvement and empowerment. Despite her debilitating anxiety, Shoquita seized an opportunity to work as a secretary at an elementary school.
Her newfound role not only provided her with a steady income but also instilled a sense of purpose and belonging. With sheer dedication and hard work, Shoquita not only paid off her outstanding rent balance but exceeded expectations by contributing more towards her financial obligations.
Today, Shoquita stands as a shining example of triumph over adversity. Her love for her job fuels her passion for making a positive impact in the lives of others. With each passing day, Shoquita continues to thrive, consistently meeting her financial obligations and embracing the opportunities that come her way.
Thanks to UPO’s intensive case management, she has developed a strong sense of financial responsibility, recognizing that timely rent payments contribute to stability and saving money fosters long-term financial security. This newfound understanding reflects her commitment to managing her finances effectively, paving the way for a more stable and secure future.
Shoquita's journey is an inspiration for those facing similar struggles, proving that with perseverance, one can rise above any adversity and succeed.
