Help UPO Help the DC Homeless

After a late winter snow storm in March, the day, after the first day of spring, Little by Little we look forward to being blessed with a “little” warmer weather in DC. As always UPO’s Shelter Hotline has been kept busy helping the DC Homeless reach shelter during the late winter Hypothermia Alerts and we are now gearing up for the sweltering summer months, responding to Hyperthermia Alerts and transporting the DC Homeless to cooling stations.

Thank you, dear loyal friends, for your generous support of our Help UPO Help the DC Homeless project to date. We have now received 284 donations raising a total of $16,761 towards our goal of $20,000 and your support is urgently needed to provide much needed funding of comfort items for the DC Homeless during the searing summer months ahead.

GlobalGiving is providing us with a great opportunity to accelerate the funds we raise; from Monday April 9th at 9:00am EDT through Friday April 13th GlobalGiving will match donations up to $50 at 50%, with $50,000 in matching funds available. This is our week to celebrate the power of the crowd and demonstrate that “little” donations add up to BIG change!

And these are the reasons why your support remains so vital!

Funded by the Community Partnership for the Prevention of Homelessness the UPO Shelter Hotline represents the entry point assisting homeless folks off the street, transporting them to Homeless Shelters and providing them with comfort items. A 2017 Point-in-Time Count of Homeless Persons in DC (see PDF below) found that there were 7,473 homeless people in Washington DC on a single night.

Winter and summer over 40 dedicated UPO Shelter Hotline employees communicate with shelters to coordinate transportation services for recently displaced individuals and families. We are the sole provider of transportation services for the DC homeless population. Last year we provided 155,476 rides. Our vans are seen throughout the District distributing blankets, sleeping bags and other comfort items, funded by your donations, to the homeless. During peak seasonal temperatures Shelter Hotline drivers work 24 hours a day during the winter and summer months transporting individuals to shelters, cooling stations and feeding centers, literarily helping to save lives.

UPO’s mission is Uniting People with Opportunities. As the designated community action agency for DC, UPO services DC homeless through our programs. The Office of Early Learning provides children of homeless families with free education and family support. Our Workforce Institute provides free job skills training and job placement services preparing individuals for a journey to opportunity, success, and the future they deserve!

As we help the homeless to self-sufficiency, we believe that they deserve the decency of basic comfort items that we can take for granted. See how much your gift of up to $50 can help! So please take a moment to renew your support of Help UPO Help the DC Homeless by making a “little” donation to our Little by Little Matching Campaign!

$50,000 of Matching Funds are up for grabs, but we are competing with hundreds of other “good causes”, so please make your gift of up to $50 early say on Monday April 9th or Tuesday April 10th to be sure your gift qualifies for a match!

December was colder than normal. January was colder than normal. The first third of February was colder than normal. And Washington has 3.1 inches of snow to show for it.

We haven’t seen so much cold air and so little snow up to this point since the winter of 1985-86 (see the complete Washington Post article this is quoted from at the link attached to this report)

Temperatures have reached the low teens Fahrenheit, well below freezing, periodically for several days at a time and we have had sustained strong winds on a number of occasions reaching up to 50 mph. UPO’s Shelter Hotline has been kept busy helping the DC Homeless reach shelter during the numerous Hypothermia Alerts.

The results of Groundhog Day February 2, 2018 are in: According to legend, we're in for six more weeks of winter because Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow. That's in spite of forecasts that predicted a cloudy, shadow-less morning (see the complete USA Today article this is quoted from at the link attached to this report)

Funded by the Community Partnership for the Prevention of Homelessness the UPO Shelter Hotline represents the entry point assisting homeless folks off the street, transporting them to Homeless Shelters and providing them with comfort items. There are more than 8,000 homeless people in Washington DC!  Winter and summer over 40 dedicated UPO Shelter Hotline employees communicate with shelters to coordinate transportation services for recently displaced individuals and families. We are the sole provider of transportation services for the DC homeless population. Last year we provided 155,476 rides. Our vans are seen throughout DC distributing food, water, blankets, sleeping bags and other comfort items, funded by your donations, to the homeless.  During peak seasonal temperatures Shelter Hotline drivers work 24 hours a day during the winter and summer months transporting individuals to shelters, cooling stations and feeding centers. We’re here to help and save lives.

Thank you, dear loyal friends, for your generous support of our Help UPO Help the DC Homeless project.  We have now received 276 donations raising a total of $16,587 to-date! During the past 3 months we have received $1,100 from 26 new gifts and have retained our Superstar status on Global Giving! We appeal for your continued support to reach our project goal of $20,000 to provide much needed funding of comfort items for the remaining frigid weeks of winter and the searing summer months ahead. Please tell your friends and family about our work!

The driver calls some of the men by name. Sometimes he uses a nickname — like “Champ” or “Red” — to set them at ease. He knows who is headed to “New York Ave” and who will spend the night at “801.”

And when each passenger gets off the bus — back at a homeless shelter after a day on D.C.’s gentrifying streets — Orlando Gore wishes them well with an honorific they rarely hear elsewhere:

“Have a good night, gentlemen!”

Gore has spent four years driving a nightly loop from downtown to local homeless shelters. He is not the face of Mayor Muriel E. Bowser’s efforts to decrease the high homeless rate in the nation’s capital. Nor is he a main force behind getting his riders out of the shelters and into their own homes.

Instead, he is a one-man generator of small acts of kindness, driven by his own memories of tough times in his native North Carolina and his early years in Washington, D.C.

UPO’s Shelter Hotline was featured in the Washington Post on August 9, 2017. The article profiles one our drivers, Orlando Gore, who shares his experiences, memories and passion for helping DC’s homeless. Above is an excerpt but you can read the article in its entirety at the link below.

This article struck a chord in hearts of several National Capital Area residents who generously responded with online gifts and checks directly to UPO.

Dear loyal supporters, you have helped UPO raise more than $15,000 during the past two years to Help the DC Homeless. This beautiful article must surely strike a chord in your heart, re-affirming your compassionate decision to support our Help UPO Help the DC Homeless project. We hope you are re-inspired by the humane and respectful manner our Shelter Hotline staff carry out their duties transporting the homeless off the streets to shelters during the extreme cold in the winter and to cooling centers during the sweltering heat in the summer. While doing so they provide their customers with care packages, water, food trays and protective clothing, all funded by your generous donations.

Global Giving’s Final Bonus Day of the year is tomorrow Thursday, October 5th, 2017

Begins at 9:00:01 EDT and ends at 23:59:59 EDT

A great opportunity for you to renew your generous support, Help UPO Help the DC Homeless, by providing our devoted and passionate Shelter Hotline drivers with adequate supplies of care packages, water, food trays and protective clothing to distribute to warm the hearts of their unfortunate homeless customers.

Temporary Shelter from the Heat for HOMELESS KIDS
Temporary Shelter from the Heat for HOMELESS KIDS

Today, youth make up 16% of the world’s population, the largest ever in history. Children around the world experience extreme poverty.

Children in Washington DC make up 21% of the Districts population, 26% of DC’s youth experience poverty and 7.4% of these children are homeless. A 2016 Point-in-Time Count of Homeless Persons in DC found that there were 2,732 homeless children in Washington DC on a single night. Unfortunately this is an increase of 32.9% over the 2015 Count of 2,056.

With a rise in DC homeless, the UPO Shelter Hotline vans transport thousands of homeless people on the streets of DC each year to shelters during periods of extremely frigid winter cold and to cooling centers during periods of oppressive summer heat.

Please help us raise money for comfort items for the homeless we assist, from feminine items to water, cold beverages, ponchos, tarps socks and care packages for the children.

UPO's mission is Uniting People with Opportunities. As the designated community action agency for DC, UPO serves DC homeless through our programs. The UPO’s Office of Early Learning provides children of homeless families with free education and family support.
