Supporting displaced women and girls in Ukraine

International Menstrual Health Day, which takes place annually on May 28, is a crucial global awareness day to promote menstrual health management, break the silence around periods and challenge harmful social stigmas.

When the war in Ukraine began, it upended the lives of hundreds of thousands of girls. Now, more than 10 million people have been displaced. Women, children and woman-led households are among the most vulnerable populations, facing resource shortages, barriers to accessing services and increased protection risks — including gender-based violence.

In 2024, an estimated 14.6 million individuals in the region will require humanitarian aid, with 56% being women and girls. Plan International's programs in East and Central Europe include a focus on providing individuals with the products and resources they need to maintain their menstrual health.

Over the past two years, Plan and its partner Equilibrium have delivered aid near the frontlines in Ukraine, with plans to distribute an additional 300 health kits in June to young people who attend Parenting and Adolescent Life Skills sessions.

Periods don't stop in emergencies. As the war in Ukraine continues, Menstrual Health Day serves as a reminder that people who menstruate often struggle to manage their periods during crises due to limited access to basic supplies and essential health services.

Plan, its donors and partners will continue to ensure those affected by the war have the support and resources they need to manage their menstrual health with dignity.

Thank you for your commitment to protecting children — especially girls — and their families during emergencies.
