Project Report | Jan 30, 2015
The success of our children in 2014!!!

By Anastasia Starobykhovskaya | Program Manager

Dear Friends!

We thank you for your support of our project on Global Giving! Since the beginning of the project, 120 people have donated $ 13,616! With your help the lives of children with severe mental and physical disabilities have significantly improved!

Achievements of children  with mental disability in  Elatma’s orphanage
Daily social integration and rehabilitation activities help the children reach their maximum capabilities and adapt to life, no matter how complex disorders they have. These activities develop their skills of movement, self- service, learning, speech, social adjustment.

As a result:
Nikita L. (name changed) has learned to reach for things, and he likes this process very much.
Galia M. (name changed) learned to draw - for example, a Christmas tree and a rainbow; can string beads. She also succeeded in some household skills such as making sandwiches, laying the table, taking care of the younger ones.
Pauline L. (name changed) learned to hold a cup and drink without any assistance, learning to stand and walk with minimal support already.

December was very busy with interesting events - the children were getting ready for the New Year, waiting for the guests and Santa Claus with gifts! In these days it has become particularly noticeable that all children successfully socialize - by the way they communicate, behave and understand what is happening around them.

Dog-therapy surprising results
During 2014 thanks to your help we provided dog-therapy in Moscow Orphanage #8 for children with disabilities and the results are obvious.

All our children have strong improvements in:
• the development of cognitive activity,
• a reduction of spasticity,
• the coordination of movements,
• reduction of phobias (not afraid of dogs anymore for example),
• the emotional state,
• the increasing of sociability (better contact with the adults and between themselves).

As a result:
Dog therapy sessions contributed to the development of speech of Stepan K. (name changed) - he said his first words and now talks all the time with his shrill voice! During this year the boy began to walk and move better, with improved range of motion. He loves to drive a dog on the leash: this exercise is a great way of self-affirmation for all the children, because they lead here and they feel important!

Before the therapy Kate L. (name changed) was sufficiently aggressive, she could suddenly hit hard or grasp. Now she becomes more quiete after every session and you can see how much she likes the classes. At the last session the specialist kneaded spastic arms and legs in the form of the game under cheerful songs and poems. And she was so emotionally relaxed that after class she sat quietly on a chair and just watched.

We express our deep appreciation for the quality of life of children with severe developmental disabilities! Your help is invaluable!

Help children develop further - tell your friends about us, support further development of the children!
