Children with disabilities begin to develop!

By Anastasia Starobykhovskaya | Charity Help Program Manager

Dear Friend!

We thank you for your support of our project on Global Giving! Since the beginning of the project, 93 people have donated $ 11,936!

With your help, the quality of life of children with severe and multiple physical developmental disabilities has been improving steadily! In Elatma`s Orphanage specialists continue to hold daily developmental activities for the social adaptation and rehabilitation of 18 children. Each child has had positive results in their development, despite their dire health disorders. Here are just a few examples.

A severe diagnosis - not a sentence

Nikita (name changed) - 8 year old boy with serious brain damage. He was almost immobile and could only lie on his back in a posture of "frog". But thanks to the daily work of a specialist, he learned to change the position of his body, lying on his stomach for 35 minutes. He learned to sit in an armchair for more than an hour by himself, whereas before he needed to be surrounded by pillows for support.

At first, it was not easy to engage Nikita as he was uninterested and it caused pain. But, gradually he strengthened the muscles of his abdomen, back, chest, forearms, hands and neck. To prevent joint contractures, Nikita began to wear orthopedic devices on his legs. Now, he is able to lie down and straighten out his legs.

Not so long ago, Nikita was bottle fed. As a result of the lessons learned, Nikita can now eat pureed food from a spoon! His motor skills are developing and he now can hold a rattle.

Intensive knowledge of the world

Andrew (name changed), 15 years old, has Down syndrome and other developmental disorders, including congenital cataracts in both eyes. Five years ago, he had an operation on his eyes and Andrew began to see and learn about the world. But he didn`t immediately establish contact with others. His fears kept him sitting on his bed or somewhere in a corner. He only could move around with someone helping him.

For three years, a specialist work has provided individual therapy - training in a multisensory room and massages, developing vital skills, curiosity, perseverance and independence. He has made tremendous progress and is able to wash himself, eat with a spoon, put on socks, shoes and cap and has started to use the toilet. Despite his inhibitions, Andrew now spends time working on puzzles, playing with Legos and putting them back not only in the box, but in a cloth bag (which is much harder), stringing beads and can hold a crayon..

Andrew has changed a lot. Now, he now smiles, is sociable and active, loves to walk and play, ride on a swing or go down the slide and swimming in the pool. Andrew has grown and he is stronger. He is beginning to understand gestures and speech addressed to him.

For a healthy baby, these accomplishments may seem like very little progress. But for children with disabilities - this is a huge achievement! Efforts of the specialists are not in vain and prove - even children with very severe disabilities develop in many ways!

Thank you for your support for our children! Together we can make their lives better!

These children need continuous therapy - make a donation, tell your friends about them, continue to support the development of children!
