Children in Elatma gain 18 new skills

By Anastasiya Starobykhovskaya | Project Manager

Dear Friend,

We sincerely thank you for your support of our Global Giving project!

With your help, the Elatma`s orphanage (Ryazan region) continues to hold Portage teaching sessions. This year, the specialists have already conducted 1540 sessions with 20 children having severe developmental disorders.

The "Portage" method has been used all over the world since the 70s of the 20th century and is designed for individual work with children who have various psychophysical disorders. With the help of this method, children with various levels of disabilities acquire skills in the areas of socialization, self-service, cognition, motor activity, and communication. More than 10 years ago, Russian organizations began to successfully apply the methodology.

Ksenia (the name has been altered) has lately learned to score pegs, 5 out of 5! Following instructions of the tutor, she hangs her sweater or jacket onto a hanger and fixes it on the crossbar. Ksyusha has also learned to answer in the affirmative when she is asked something. There are some other new skills that are being worked out.

Elya (the name has been altered) has been in the project since the beginning of the year, her spasticity is progressing and now almost all the time she has to stay lying. But, during this short period of time, she has already learned 3 skills! Elya smiles and makes joyful sounds, looking at her reflection in the mirror. She has learned to follow brightly coloured toys with her eyes. And one more important result: Elya has learned to keep her feeding-bottle without any assistance, even though her fingers spasticity is very strong!

All these children have very serious intellectual and physical disabilities, each child has his/her own big "bunch" ... But despite this, each of them has developed significantly. The "Portage" method allows to take into account particularities and abilities of each child. And with the patience of teachers and their faith in each child, sooner or later the long-awaited victory does come!

We express our most sincere appreciation to our Philanthropists for supporting these sessions - without you, the development of children would have been impossible!

Stay with us, making donations and telling your friends about us – children need your support very much!
