Mozambique is one of the world's poorest economies, ranking 175 out of 179 countries on the Human Development Index. Opportunity is working to help people help themselves out of extreme poverty.
More than half of Mozambicans live on less than $1 per day. Education levels are incredibly low, especially regarding knowledge of saving, budgeting, and investing money. Opportunity is reaching out to serve the most impoverished working people in Mozambique.
Extending rural outreach via mobile banks and bank building in Mozambique helps solve financial issues that contribute to poverty. The bank currently serves 8,831 families with loans and more than 35,000 families with savings accounts.
With the rollout of its agriculture finance program, Opportunity Mozambique plans to increase its number of satellite branches and ATM service centers to serve smallholder farmers in 2011. This will enable Mozambicans to plan and save for the future.
