Introduction:

For over 28 years, Kashif Iqbal Thalassaemia Care Centre (KITCC) has provided free, life-saving care to more than 1,000 registered thalassaemia patients in Pakistan. Thalassaemia, a severe genetic blood disorder, requires regular blood transfusions, iron chelation therapy, and comprehensive medical support services that many families cannot afford. With the critical support of GlobalGiving, KITCC ensures that patients receive uninterrupted treatment, psychosocial support, and advocacy to live healthier, more hopeful lives.

Key Services & Impact:

1. Lifesaving Blood Transfusions

KITCC provides free, screened blood to registered patients, but severe blood shortages, especially during Karachi’s recent extreme heatwaves, have made transfusions harder to secure. Rising temperatures (exceeding 40°C/104°F) have led to fewer blood donors, as people avoid outdoor movement. Increased cases of heatstroke and dehydration make many potential donors ineligible. Despite these challenges, KITCC continues emergency blood drives and community awareness campaigns to maintain supply.

2. Iron Chelation Therapy

Without treatment, iron overload from frequent transfusions causes organ failure and early death. KITCC provides free chelation medicines, helping patients avoid complications and improving long-term survival.

3. Psycho-Social Support & Patient Empowerment

The Psycho-Social Well-Being Centre (PSWC) offers mental health counselling, resilience training, and peer support, followed by meditation sessions twice a day to eradicate the disturbance and stress from the minds of these innocent kids.

Conclusion

Karachi’s extreme weather and blood shortages have made KITCC’s mission more urgent than ever. Yet, with GlobalGiving’s support, we continue to save lives. Your generosity ensures that kids with thalassaemia receive the care they need regardless of weather, cost, or stigma.
