The Hidden Battle After Transfusions

Dear Kind Donor,

When people think about thalassaemia, they often think about blood transfusions. While these transfusions are essential for survival, there is another challenge that follows every transfusion and often goes unnoticed: iron overload.

Every unit of transfused blood contains iron. Unlike healthy individuals, thalassaemia patients who receive regular blood transfusions cannot naturally remove this excess iron from their bodies. Over time, iron accumulates in vital organs such as the heart, liver, pancreas, and endocrine glands, leading to serious and potentially life-threatening complications.

The Challenge Beyond Blood

At Kashif Iqbal Thalassaemia Care Centre Trust (KITCC), more than 1,000 registered thalassaemia patients depend on regular blood transfusions to survive. However, blood alone is not enough.

To prevent iron overload, patients require continuous monitoring through ferritin testing, medical evaluations, and iron chelation therapy. These medicines help remove excess iron from the body and protect patients from complications such as heart disease, liver damage, diabetes, hormonal disorders, and reduced life expectancy.

Unfortunately, the cost of chelation medicines and monitoring continues to rise, making it increasingly difficult for many families to sustain treatment on their own. Most of the families we serve come from underprivileged backgrounds and rely heavily on charitable support to access comprehensive care.

Because of your generosity, our patients continue to receive the treatment and monitoring they need beyond blood transfusions.

Your support has helped us:

Provide regular blood transfusions to over 1,000 registered patients.
Deliver thousands of iron chelation therapies throughout the year.
Conduct ferritin monitoring and medical assessments to identify complications early.
Support families who otherwise would not be able to afford essential treatment.

Rising Costs, Rising Needs: Let's Keep Hope Alive

Dear Kind Donor,

More than a thousand Thalassemia patients look up to us for their survival across Sindh. Every child needs a blood transfusion, and that too every 2 weeks, which is followed by monthly iron chelation therapy, which is mandatory to protect their organs from iron overload. These treatments are not optional for them; they are the thin line between life and death.

The extended challenge

During the past few months, the increasing cost of important medicines and medical supplies has made the mission of KITCC even harder. Prices of iron chelation drugs like Deferasirox and Deferiprone have increased because of inflation and a shortage of supply. In parallel, the economic recession is making it difficult for families to get proper Thalassemia treatment, as most of the people are underprivileged, and it's nearly impossible for them to afford any treatment on their own.

Without the constant support of iron chelation therapy, children suffering from thalassemia have high health risks and might have severe complications like liver failure, diabetes and heart disease. This eventually means shorter life expectancy, which is again not acceptable for us.

You have created an impact!

Thanks to your generosity, our center has been able to:

Provided over 18,500 blood transfusions in the past year.
Administered more than 25,000 iron chelation therapies, saving children from life-threatening iron overload.
Support awareness and prevention programs to reduce the spread of this inherited condition in future generations.

Every contribution you have made has truly been a lifeline. Each child who smiles after a safe transfusion is proof of the difference you make.

Why do we need you more than ever now?

With the success, we still need you; there is still a huge gap to fill. Rising costs mean that the funds we once used to treat many patients now cover far fewer therapies. To meet the end goals for our project, we still need your donations to ensure uninterrupted treatment for 1,050 registered patients.

We cannot let financial barriers decide who lives and who suffers.
