Help Thalassemia Patients for Blood Transfusion

Introduction  

Thalassemia is a life-threatening genetic blood disorder that requires regular blood transfusions for survival. Without consistent transfusions, patients, mostly children, face severe anemia, organ damage, and life-threatening complications. However, many families struggle to afford treatment, and blood shortages further worsen their condition. 

Kashif Iqbal Thalassemia Care Center (KITCC) is a nonprofit organization that provides free treatment and blood transfusions to children suffering from thalassemia. With support from GlobalGiving, we aim to ensure uninterrupted transfusions, raise awareness, and expand access to life-saving medical care. 

The Need for Blood Transfusions 

Patients with thalassemia major require lifelong blood transfusions every two to four weeks to: 

• Maintain healthy hemoglobin levels  
• Prevent severe anemia and fatigue  
• Reduce the risk of organ failure  
• Improve overall quality of life  

However, securing safe and sufficient blood remains a major challenge, particularly for underprivileged families. 

Challenges Faced by Thalassemia Patients 

1. Blood Shortages: Insufficient voluntary blood donations make it difficult for patients to receive timely transfusions. 
2. High Treatment Costs: In addition to transfusions, patients require iron chelation therapy to prevent iron overload, which adds to their financial burdens. 
3. Limited Awareness: Many people remain unaware of thalassemia and the importance of regular blood donations. 
4. Access to Safe Blood: Inadequate blood screening can expose patients to infections like hepatitis and HIV.
