This new project by the Syria Justice and Accountability Centre will help families discover the fate of their missing loved ones by using information discovered in prison records and intelligence documents collected immediately after the fall of the Assad government.
The Assad government imprisoned & executed tens of thousands of people as a tool of political oppression, often hiding this information from families who continue to wait for news of their loved ones. However, the former government left behind millions of documents recording arrests, transfers, and deaths, which could provide answers to Syrian families. Unfortunately, Families do not have the ability to search the vast quantity of evidence which requires analysis from trained researchers.
SJAC possesses over 1,000,000 records from Syria's prison system, including personal information on thousands of individuals who died in detention. With your help, SJAC will begin a multistage process to analyze these documents and trace the families of those who died in detention so that we can inform them about the fate of their loved ones. This project will also offer access to trained psychologists to provide psychosocial support to families throughout the process.
Disappearances in the Syrian conflict were sudden, and most families never knew where or why a disappearance occurred. The long-term feeling of loss and trauma prevents thousands of families from being able to grieve and process their loss. This project is a chance to finally allow families to find closure and heal while helping them to rebuild their lives after over a decade of conflict.
