In February 2014 Street Kids International UK delivered its first project in Ghana, in conjunction with our local partner, the Head of State Award Scheme Ghana (HOSA) and other local Youth-Serving Organizations (YSO’s). We provided a ‘live’ two-week Training of Trainers workshop, to train 14 youth workers in the business content and participatory facilitation skills needed to deliver our Street Business Toolkit. The Toolkit provides training that is accessible to youth with low literacy levels and little experience of formal education, guiding them through simple, practical steps to plan and start a business.
The two-week workshop also saw 28 marginalised young people trained in our Toolkit. The programme equipped them with the skills and support they required to start and expand a small business, save money and work towards a better future for them and their families.
The programme has been ongoing throughout the year. Since the initial training, the youth workers have returned to their organisations and rolled out the Street Business Toolkit to young people in their local communities. A total of 183 youth have been trained by local youth workers to start their own business and earn a sustainable living.
In addition to building the capacity of youth workers and young people, the project has been strengthened by a Community of Practice. Through regular meetings, local YSO’s have had the chance to share their experiences in relation to youth livelihoods programming, identify common needs and/or challenges, and work together to seek solutions.
Thanks to your continued support, 183 young people and their families have benefited from our life-changing training. Moreover, their youth workers have a support network in place to continue to train more and more youth each year. Thank you!
