This project will provide business and financial skills training to marginalised youth in Sekondi-Takoradi, Ghana. In recent years, the number of street-active youth in this area has dramatically increased with many forced to survive through dangerous and illegal means. The project will provide youth with the skills and support they require to start or expand small businesses, find gainful employment or return to education, so that they are better able to support themselves and their families.
There has been a surge in the number of street-active young people in Sekondi-Takoradi, the majority of whom are attracted by the city's oil industry and related activities. These youth do not have the skills they need to compete for the employment opportunities that are available, leaving them vulnerable and lacking confidence. Many of these youth are forced to meet their basic needs through means which are dangerous, socially unacceptable and illegal.
Street Kids International (SKI) will partner with local youth-serving organisations in Sekondi-Takoradi, training 15 youth workers to roll-out our practical, imaginative and comprehensive business training to street youth in their areas. Experience has shown that young people who receive our training gain the skills and confidence to start or expand a small business or secure a paid job. Youth who earn a decent living are better able to support themselves and contribute to their family income
SKI will build the capacity of local organisations and youth workers to deliver business training to youth in their communities. Local organisations integrate our training into their youth livelihood programmes, ensuring the impact is sustained far beyond the project period. Following the project, the 15 trained youth workers have the capacity to train up to 210 youth per year, indefinitely. Trained youth can feel confident in their earning potential and their ability to meet their basic needs.
