In many Indian families, a paternalistic role model prevails. While men go to work, bring home the money and are considered the head of the family, women take care of the household and raise the children. With the Maitri project, which we support, we help women to lead a self-determined life without violence. They do not have to be dependent on their husbands!
We also support women like Sita who now lives a self-determined life in an equal relationship. But this was not always the case.
Sita comes from a poor family. When she entered the eighth grade, she had to drop out of school because her parents considered her a financial burden. They forced Sita to marry a man at the age of 14 and start a family. With her husband, two sons, a daughter and her mother-in-law, she lives in a house in Kumher, Rajasthan. Just like Sita's father, her husband is a laborer.
Before Sita joined the Maitri network, she was secretive and shy. She rarely left the house, and certainly not to develop herself. In 2021, she finally encountered the network. Although she had to ask her husband for permission to go to the network meetings, there she then learnt about the discrimination she experiences as a woman and what equality means inside and outside of family life.
Since regularly attending the network meetings, Sita has developed into a self-confident, open woman. She now knows what it means to lead a self-determined life as a woman in India. She has also been able to overcome her shyness. She has recently stood on stage to inform other women about her experiences and spread the message of equality!
Sita now faces her husband with much more self-confidence. She was able to convince him that women can also lead an equal life. In the past, she took care of the household alone. Today, Sita and her husband share the housework, which has given her the time to go to work. Together they can give their children a better life. Many people in the village do not approve of Sita and her husband having an equal partnership, even her mother-in-law mocks them.
Thanks to your support we can continue to uplift women and their voices!
