Since 2007 the situation of freedom of expression in Ecuador has suffered a terrible decline. Citizens, journalists and media have limited space to express information and opinion, and are constantly attacked and threatened by the things they say. Fundamedios is a NGO working since 2007 on the monitoring of attacks and threats to freedom of expression and permanently reporting what is happening in the country.
Ecuador is one of the worst countries for freedom of expression in Latin America. According to the ranking of Reporters Without Borders Ecuador ranks 108 of 180 countries with a score of 33.65. According to reports of press freedom by Freedom House, Ecuador is not free, classification shared with Mexico, Honduras, Cuba and Venezuela. Every day a journalist, a citizen or a media suffers an attack in the country, which could not be adequately made visible internationally.
All donations received will be used to maintain a network of correspondents around the country to report attacks and threats to freedom of expression. Donations will also serve to produce and disseminate information in English so that more people know the situation of Ecuador.
The greatest long-term impact is to visibilize and raise awareness internationally about the situation in Ecuador. The world community should know that Ecuador lives a similar situations to other countries in the region such as Mexico, Honduras, Cuba and Venezuela, in which its citizens are prosecuted for criticizing the authorities, journalists are persecuted for the information they present and some media have disappeared by large fines imposed by the state.
