In rural areas of Cambodia, mothers and babies are vulnerable to complications due to high-risk pregnancies. Japan Heart Cambodia has built a perinatal ward at the Japan Heart Children's Medical Center for managing high-risk births and pregnancies, maternity classes and midwife training for local nurses. Japan Heart will expand this project by hiring and training more midwives, purchasing much needed equipment and expanding our capacity to save the lives of more mothers and children.
The mortality rate of Cambodian women from pregnancy and childbirth related complications is more than 40 times higher than that of Japan and other developed countries and the mortality of babies is 15 times higher. As Cambodia is a young nation, with the average age around 26, there are many pregnancies, but not enough advanced medical care to rectify these tragic statistics.
Japan Heart supports mothers, babies and local midwives by providing medical treatment, maternity classes and training. Japan Heart also works with a local government hospital to provide training and equipment for perinatal services as well as handling their high risk cases through our hospitals perinatal unit. Japan Heart regularly invites obstetrics specialists and surgeons from Japan to help with cases that otherwise would be too difficult to treat.
Since opening in 2016, Japan Heart has held more than 12,000 pregnancy checkups and 1,500 deliveries. Our project is already seeing success as local hospitals are able to handle high-risk births more effectively, allowing our unit to focus on training, assessing pregnancies and high-risk cases. We expect that going forward, our training programs will expand and we will only need to handle high-risk births.
