Making memories and new friends!
Making new memories and new friends, youth trip summer 25.
A group of 14 young people, 4 leaders and their children have just spent two weeks at the project in Uganda.
This energetic group of young people rolled up their sleeves and got to work painting classrooms in the primary school, renovated and painted the playground equipment and helping out in the clinic and with child care at the schools. They also spent time with the pupils and students, playing, doing craftwork, games and lots of sporting activities. Fantastic!
They had an unforgettable time making new precious and life changing memories and lots of enthusiasic new friends! journey. What touched them the most? Without a doubt, the stories of the children, patients and staff, who grew up in circumstances we can hardly imagine. Children who had to survive on their own at a very young age, without a mother or father. Patients who have little or no money to pay for their care, who save up just to buy basic health care that we so take for granted in the “West”. Sometimes having to walk miles to get to a health care facility.
Fourteen young people embarked on this extraordinary trip to Uganda. Beforehand, they could not have imagined the deep impact this journey would have—on the children in Uganda, and on themselves.
Moving encounters: Two staff members shared their stories:
Helene, one of the young participants, said: “It was so overwhelming to hear how they grew up. The difficult circumstances they faced at such a young age, having to care for themselves, with little or no one to look after them. Without parents, without love, without a home. It’s unimaginable what they went through as children. It truly broke my heart to hear their stories.
Experiencing Health Care in Uganda is a world away from in the West.
Several members of the group who have medical experience/training helped out in the clinic and also got he opportunity to go into the community on an Outreach Day. They performed blood tests and tested for malaria and other diseases that one rarely comes across in Holland. They were able to help with the registration of patients, recording vital signs, for example, blood pressure, weighing babies and giving vaccinations and immunisations.
Outreach day blog: “Around nine o'clock we finally left after we had picked up two more nurses and Henry at a pharmacy, and we went on our way. First past a school where we gave the children some medication, then on to the village. We were warmly welcomed by the village chief Ana who laid out mats for us to sit on. Here everyone was gathered, medication was dispersed, and people were checked for HIV and information was also given about it. It was strange and somehow difficult because people also came with far larger and complex medical problems that we couldn't treat now. They should just go to the hospital for that, but they don't because it costs too much money. But it's really good that there is this form of Outreach and that it seems to work. “
Oxygen concentrator
Great news, the Oxygen concentrator that we wrote about in the last report has arrived and is already making a huge difference in patient care and outcomes in the clinic. It is proving a very valuable new asset in the clinic. Thanks to the all the donors who made it possible to purchase it. See* how you can help support and donate.
You can visit the clinic too! Building Trip to Uganda 2 - 12 March 2026,
Next year we are organising a building trip!
Are you handy with tools, like rolling up your sleeves and eager to make a difference in the lives of children in Uganda?
Shadow hut and dormitories
This group are going to build a shadow hut for patients at the clinic. This is desperately needed, as there is currently only one tent for the patients and visitors who have to wait outside. This is too small meaning that many people need to wait outside with no or very little shade in the scoring sun overhead. The group are also going to paint several of the children's dormitories.
Children
And of course, it's not all about DIY. You will also get to meet the children on campus! You can help serve meals and take part in fun sports and games with the children. If you have a medical background, you can also help in the clinic. There are also a number of exciting excursions, such as visiting a waterfall and taking a boat trip on the Nile.
Where are you going?
You are going to our campus in Namugongo. Here, Kinderhulp Afrika works together with Children's Welfare Mission to help more than 1,000 children. Many of them are orphans. They live on campus and also go to school here.
Who is it for?
The trip is for both men and women. Anyone who is reasonably handy can come along. The most important thing is that you enjoy rolling up your sleeves and getting stuck in. And the great thing is, everyone gets a Kinderhulp Afrika work shirt from us!
Registration
We would love to have you join us on this trip! Register before 1 December by sending an email to info@kinderhulp-afrika.nl. Please read the additional information and terms and conditions carefully beforehand.
30 Years of Service - Thank You, Arjan van der Kraan
On September 1st, Kinderhulp-Afrika celebrated a very special anniversary, Arjan van der Kraan marked 30 years as a board member of Kinderhulp Afrika. What an incredible milestone! His faithfulness, dedication, and deep commitment to the children in Uganda is truly inspiring.
Arjan reflects with gratitude on the past years:
“Hundreds of vulnerable orphans received an education, a diploma, a sense of worth, and a relationship with their Heavenly Father—the One who calls Himself Father to the fatherless. They also found a family in the large ‘Children’s Welfare Mission’ community. And then there are five, who now (almost) live independently, but still call me ‘dad’ and often visit me when I’m in the country.”
