Patient Relief Mission (PRM) exists to improve cancer care and management for female patients and their caregivers by providing hostel accommodation, transport to and from the Uganda Cancer Institute (UCI) for treatment, and three meals a day to patients from rural areas who would otherwise have nowhere to stay while receiving treatment in Kampala. PRM was founded with the aim of ending the needless suffering experienced by cancer patients and their families during treatment.
We are pleased to share progress made on the construction of the Patient Relief Mission facility during this reporting period.
Construction of the project is now approximately 70% complete. To date, three buildings have been constructed, including the office and administration block. This block will also accommodate examination rooms and a pharmacy once the facility becomes operational.
During the reporting period, we continued carrying out improvements to the compound and routine maintenance works on completed structures to ensure that they remain in good condition. We have also continued servicing and maintaining the project vehicle to keep it roadworthy and ready to support project activities.
Accessibility to the facility remains important, particularly during the rainy season. We therefore continued grading and maintaining the access roads around the facility to improve movement to and from the site.
Although the facility has not yet started receiving patients, the progress made brings us closer to completing the project and making the hostel ready for use by cancer patients and their caregivers.
Challenges
The main challenge during the reporting period was slow funding, which affected the pace of some construction activities. Heavy rains also caused poor road conditions and occasional landslides, making transportation of materials and access to the site more difficult.
Looking Ahead
In the coming months, we will focus on completing the remaining construction works and preparing the facility for operation. This will include completing the unfinished structures, carrying out the necessary fittings and installations, and ensuring that all facilities are ready before receiving patients.
We thank all our donors and partners for their continued support. The progress achieved so far would not have been possible without your contribution, and we look forward to sharing further updates as the project moves toward completion.
