Summary

Beekeeping is a sustainable, cost-effective, and ecologically friendly way for rural smallholder farmers to generate income and enhance household food security. GivingHope Foundation aims to support 65 rural Ugandan farmers who have expressed interest in developing beekeeping and honey production. This initiative will benefit both their families and the environment. With this project, we seek to establish 195 new beehives and provide technical support to new beekeepers.

Challenge

Rural women traditionally do all the household chores, and take care of their families including education, and health. They do not own much since it's the men who receive money. This leaves women with little income of their own. Due to high poverty levels in rural communities in Uganda, many families turn to unsustainable streams of income such as cutting down trees and other destructive ecosystem practices.

Solution

Beekeeping is less tasking and can be implemented on a small piece of land. It requires less time and is not laborious. Also, honey can be harvested at different times from crop harvests. 3 beehives will give an income of around $100 per year which can cover the food expenses of a family of 5 for 3 months. This is a great addition to the family income and can be a lifesaver for many women. Additionally, farmers will be active throughout the year, increasing their opportunities to earn income.hel

Long-Term Impact

The project will support 65 female farmers to increase their income from honey and honey byproducts and indirectly support 325 people. A forum of beekeepers will be created to enable collaboration, information discrimination and effective decision-making within the project. Beneficiaries will maintain the bee hives on their own land which will be constantly monitored through GHF visits. Once the core farmers have gained significant experience in beekeeping, they will train other group members.
