Help 65 poor women to start Beekeeping in Uganda

We recently conducted a monitoring visit to check on the progress of our beekeeping initiative, and we’re thrilled to report that all seven distributed beehives are doing well. Although some hives colonized earlier than others, the bees are thriving, and the farmers are diligently caring for their hives. This success is a testament to the commitment and teamwork of the women involved in the project.

In addition to managing their hives, the beekeeping savings group is already planning for the future. The group has been meeting regularly, not only to share knowledge and discuss challenges but also to save for essential harvesting and storage equipment. Their forward-thinking approach demonstrates their dedication to ensuring the long-term sustainability of this initiative.

Looking ahead, three of the hives that were colonized early are expected to yield their first harvest early next year. This milestone will mark a significant step toward economic empowerment for the women farmers, providing both income and a sense of achievement. We remain committed to supporting their journey and are excited to share more updates as they continue to thrive.

We are pleased to share the latest updates on our beekeeping project, which continues to empower and transform the lives of rural women in Hoima, Uganda.

Beekeeping Savings Group: Our dedicated project beneficiaries took the initiative to form a special beekeeping savings group. This group meets regularly to share knowledge, discuss challenges, and save for essential beekeeping equipment. These meetings have fostered a strong sense of community and collaboration. We believe that this initiative will enhance the overall success of the project. 

Support and Monitoring Visits:  Our team has been actively visiting and supporting the beekeepers. One notable example is a farmer who initially set her beehive in a coffee tree. After a heavy storm caused the beehive to fall and the bees to flee, our staff assisted her in building a stable stand and successfully recolonizing the hive. This hands-on support is crucial in ensuring the sustainability of the beekeeping activities.

Colonization Success: We are thrilled to report that four of the seven distributed beehives have been colonised successfully. This milestone is a testament to the hard work and dedication of both the farmers and our team. We are committed to continuing our efforts to help the remaining three hives achieve colonization.

Expected harvests: Local experts recommend to wait for up to a year after colonization before making the first harvest. The first year is all about setting up home and getting established - they need to make lots of wax which takes time.

We remain dedicated to providing ongoing support to our beekeepers. Together, we are making significant strides towards economic independence and sustainable livelihoods for the women in Hoima.
