Hello from EIM Haiti. It’s the summer, which means it’s exam season. And while we’re doing things a bit differently this year, we’re still going strong.
Given all the violence and instability Haiti has endured in recent months and the unknowns surrounding the recent arrival of Kenyan military troops – we were sadly not able to bring any international volunteers to Haiti this year for our annual review season. We did not take this decision lightly. In fact, with the exception of COVID in 2020, this is the first time we’ve ever done this.
That said, given all the investment we’ve put into our school’s technology and high speed WiFi, we were proud to host a hybrid exam season for the very first time. Our incredible teachers gave the written exams, while key members of our international team held listening and speaking sessions via WhatsApp. Despite a few technical issues, we are thrilled we were able to still keep momentum going for our classes. Marking is underway as we speak, so no news about graduates at this point!
Lastly, we’re in the process of planning our 2024-2025 school year. Given the loss of our beloved teacher Lepty earlier this year, along with dips in participation as many have fled the country, we will likely be reducing the overall size of our operations this coming fall. Let me be clear: we’re not going anywhere. In fact, this reduction in scale is something we’ve debated for several years now. Hopefully by being leaner, we’ll be able to stay sustainable and thrive for years to come.
As always, thank you for your unwavering support of EIM. We wish you all the best.
