Back to school after Covid

Dear Friends,

One year on since the start of the global health pandemic caused by COVID-19 and life seems to be returning to some semblance of normality for some, but for many, life has changed for good.

Back to school – In November, primary class 8 students went back to school to catch up on lost time and prepare for their exams which are scheduled in May.

In the beginning of January, schools opened for all ages, the children were so excited after such a long time of home-schooling to be reunited with their class mates and return to a more “normal” life. Universities opened and our students all in their final year resumed their studies with great excitement and eager to finalize their courses.  One of our youngsters started a course of plumbing and pipe-fitting at the Nairobi Water Institute, a career which is much needed and in demand!

The youngest who were left home were not so impressed, to keep them engaged we will continue a home day-care with lots of activities and fun time.

Babies & Adoption  -  those children who do not have living relatives or guardians can be registered for adoption in Kenya. We have been able to find families for a number of children in 2018/19 but due to COVID-19, the entire operation came to a halt.  Slowly, the procedures are starting again and our social worker is making a lot of progress behind the scene, to make sure some of the young children get a chance to grow up in a family.

We continue to be in touch with children who were adopted previously and its very encouraging to see how they settled and fit into their new families.

In the beginning of November  2020 we received a premature baby girl, she was abandoned after a 7 months pregnancy and found in a box on the road side. It is a miracle she even survived as she weighed barely 1kg.

The baby spent a few weeks in an incubator before being brought to the Home. We hope to find out more about any possible living relatives in due course.

Outside kitchen and dining – it has taken a long time but we finally are progressing with improving the outside dining area.  Previously this was an open space with cement floor.  After the annual inspection by the Authorities, we were afdvised to put ceramic tiles for hygiene purposes. The Committee discussed this at length and eventually decided not only to work on the dining area but also tackle the kitchen, a problem we have had since 2000!  The small inside kitchen was not safe and far too small to safely cook for all the children and staff. We made part of the structure into an enclosed kitchen so that all the cooking will now be done outside the main house! Much safer and easier to serve meals.

Chicken & Eggs Project – we are delighted to announce that the layers project has taken off well! In our previous letter we talked about the children making an outside enclosure during lockdown - this has been a great success!  We thank everyone who regularly buys our eggs.

As the demand for the eggs is quite high we are planning to expand the layers project later this year.

To make this possible we will now have to renovate the old chicken house to accommodate the 1 day old chicks until they are old enough to go out into the open yard. This will then be followed by purchase and delivery of the new flock.

On behalf of the children we would like to thank you for your support!
