Your Support is Making Lifesaving Tests Possible

By Omei Bongos-Ikwue | Project manager

Thanks to your support, we brought cervical cancer screenings and HPV vaccinations to women and girls in Gbessa community, Abuja.

Your generous contributions made it possible to bring crucial health services directly to a community where 88% of women had never heard of cervical cancer or the HPV vaccine before we arrived. It is creating real shifts in the lives of women and girls, and the ripple effect is growing.

Of the 39 women screened, an alarming 1 in 3 tested positive for early cervical cancer risks, with some showing extensive lesions requiring urgent follow-up care. And of the 76 individuals who received HIV tests, 74% were first-time testers.

Education is Empowering

These numbers represent something deeper: women walking through fear for the first time, choosing knowledge over stigma, and taking control of their health. Post-survey results showed 76% of participants gained a greater understanding of HIV, while 89% understood the purpose of screening — a powerful testament to the impact of education.

Perhaps most striking is that 88% of participants had never heard of cervical cancer or the HPV vaccine before we arrived. They came, they learned, they got screened, and left empowered with lifesaving knowledge .

Because of you:

  • 39 women received cervical cancer screenings
  • 24 girls are now protected against HPV and have one less cancer to worry about
  • 76 people received HIV testing
  • 74% were tested for HIV for the very first time
  • 13 women with cervical abnormalities were identified and referred for follow-up care

These women and girls are empowered to protect themselves and their loved ones.

And because of your continued support, we'll reach even more women and girls in more communities, one life at a time.

The work continues. Our team is now following up with the 13 women requiring confirmatory diagnostics and treatment referrals, ensuring that the journey to health doesn’t end with screening. We are also exploring opportunities to replicate this integrated model in additional communities across Nigeria.

You are making change happen.

And we are grateful for you.
