Finished building
Finished building

To our GlobalGiving family,

Congratulations to all of us – donors, engineers, Fundación staff, Board of Directors, contractors – who were part of making the construction of the Fundación A. Jean Brugger offices a reality! The office building is finished and it is beautiful.

Of course we also attribute our success to our Supervisory team, comprised of three members of the Fundación family: Engineering graduates Luis and Kenneth, and engineering student Jordan.

As former students, the engineers are very excited for the current scholarship students, because the offices include a library for student use. Many students don’t have internet access in their home or own their own computer, so the plan for the library includes computers for student use.

This has become incredibly important now during the pandemic, because almost every Nicaraguan university has switched to online classes. The students who don't own computers are participating in classes via Zoom or Google Meet on their phones. One rural student's phone blew up last week from overheating after two hours on a Zoom call. The students are also required to do homework via online platforms which is onerous on a phone screen. We have a schedule set up so that no more than two students are using the library at any time.

Once the pandemic passes, the students will be able to use the library for meetings to plan their community service projects.

We are very pleased with the interior finishings: the tile floor, cream and celestial-blue paint colors, and deep-brown wooden doors create a warm, beautiful look. A Fundación graduate, Germán, who is currently President of the Nicaraguan Board of Directors, is also an artist. We are proud to have three of his paintings gracing the walls of the offices.

The staff have moved in and love working in their beautiful, spacious offices. Thanks to a grant from the O’Fallon, Illinois Sunrise Rotary Club, the staff have comfortable new office chairs, and the library has a table and chairs ready for the students.

We have a blog on our website where you can see more photos.  (www.fundacionajbrugger.org - Building the Future - Blog; also see link below)

Thank you for being part of making our dream a reality. You have made all of this possible.

In gratitude,

Katie Brugger

To our GlobalGiving family,

What a whirlwind the last three months have been. The contractors broke ground on December 27, and next week they will be installing the roof! They are significantly ahead of schedule at this point. The official completion date is May 26 but we think the Fundación staff will already be in their offices by then.

As you will recall, an important component of the project is the supervisory team which is made up of Fundación graduates. They have made a big difference in ensuring the work goes smoothly and efficiently.

We have created a blog on our website to post more photos of the building progress; please visit to learn more about how the project is going: http://www.fundacionajbrugger.org/building-project-blog.html

The new offices are arriving just in time. The demand for university education is rising at a rapid pace and the Fundación needs to keep growing to serve this need. This year we have 47 students with scholarships, a record, and we are fairly certain that we will be adding 3 or 4 more in the next couple of weeks.

Education is the foundation for a sustainable society. Thank you for believing in the work of the Fundación. Your donation helps us to educate San Juan’s youth in the confidence this will mean a brighter future for Nicaragua.

In gratitude,

Kathleen Brugger

To our GlobalGiving family,

I am thrilled to report that the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Fundación A. Jean Brugger offices is scheduled for December 15!

Our Building Committee, which is made up of two members of the Board of Directors and two Fundación graduates in engineering, spent the last two months searching for the right contractor. The group interviewed seven contractors and received offers from six, and after careful analysis, chose a firm called MultiServicios.

Not only will this project build our new offices, it will build capacity in our students and graduates, because part of the agreement with the contractor is that they will provide work opportunities for our students and graduates. Aurora, a recent engineering graduate, will have a job as an assistant to MultiServicios’ on-site engineer. Henry, an engineering student who needs only to do an internship before he graduates, will be able to do that internship on the office project. Current engineering students will be welcome to visit the construction site and observe at any time. Three Fundación engineering graduates will form an independent supervisory team. They will be on site at all times, making sure the contractor is following the plans and technical specifications for quality of materials.

One of the reasons we chose MultiServicios was precisely because of their openness to this level of participation by our students and graduates.

Thank you for believing in the Fundación and helping us take this big step forward to ensuring the long-term future of Fundación A. Jean Brugger.

In gratitude,

Kathleen Brugger

To our GlobalGiving family,

Our Building Project continues to move forward, thanks to the support of our faithful donors.

We are currently in the exciting - and challenging - period of deciding on the builder for our new offices. We have met with two contractors and have plans to meet with two more in the next week. Thankfully we have a committed and knowledgeable team to review the contractors’ bids: Nicaraguan architects and engineers who benefitted from Fundación scholarships working in partnership with experienced North American builders who are friends of the Fundación.

Our goal is to begin construction in November, which is the beginning of the six-month dry season. Hopefully our next update will be full of news of the groundbreaking celebration!

Thanks again for your support,

Kathleen Brugger President,

US Board of Directors Fundación A. Jean Brugger

We are happy to report the progress we are making in our Building Project to our GlobalGiving family. Our architect, Jessica Céspedes, has finished the plans. Two of our former scholarship students, Architect Kiara Olivas and Construction Engineer Luis Mendoza (in photo with Fundación founder Jean Brugger) looked over the plans carefully, before giving them to a structural engineer who will review them and provide a baseline estimate for the construction.

This estimate should be complete by mid-June, at which point we will be opening the project up for bids from contractors. We already have 4 companies who have expressed interest in the project.

Nicaragua is still suffering economically from the political unrest that occurred in 2018. Because one of the requirements for our builder will be that he or she employ people from San Juan del Sur, this project will not only help the students of Fundación A. Jean Brugger when it is complete, it will also help the people of San Juan del Sur while it is being built.
