In 150 locations across NYC - including domestic violence shelters, hotlines, drop-in centers, legal clinics, police precincts, and more - Safe Horizon empowers families to address immediate needs and work toward safety, hope, and healing. Despite the COVID-19 crisis, Safe Horizon has continued operations in most locations, often accommodating client overflow from other providers that have closed. 1 out of every 4 women will be a victim of domestic violence during her lifetime. There are many reasons why a woman who suffer violence at home may choose to stay with her abuser. She is dependent on him for financial support. They have children together. She loves him. Additionally, we know that the risk of violence increases when a victim decides to leave the abuser.
Safe Horizon's domestic violence shelters are there for the women and children who make the difficult decision to flee domestic violence, but have nowhere to go. In addition to providing a safe place to stay, we offer counseling, legal support, advocacy, childcare, and practical assistance.
Safe Horizon houses over 3,000 women and children every year. During the shelter stay, we encourage every woman to utilize the services we offer so that she can build a safe and independent life for herself and her children.
