This year, the project Help more South African children achieve in Maths is supporting 1 385 learners and 28 teachers at two schools - Jamaica Way Primary and Mzamomhle Primary. Both schools have completed 83% of their online Maths exercises, as well as all of their termly assessments. Currently, the schools are getting ready to complete their half-year assessments. The learners complete all of their assessments online, which allows learners and teachers to receive immediate feedback on their results.
Once learners have completed and submitted their assessments, they can go back to their assessments and see where they have gotten any answers wrong, they can then immediately ask questions on how to correct their mistakes. This allows learners to take ownership of their individual learning. For the teacher, once the learners have submitted their assessments, the teacher can immediately view his or her learners’ scores online. The teacher also receives a summarised report with per question, per learner and per class analysis and feedback, as well as an overall summary of their learners’ assessment.
We asked a couple of teachers and learners what they liked most about doing their assessments online and how this has been helpful to them:
“Getting our results immediately also helps us improve the next time we do our assessments and it also show us what we got wrong immediately.” – Grade 6 learner, Jamaica Way Primary
“I like that the work is right there and that I get colour visual images which make it better and easier to see than the normal black and white assessments teachers give us during exams.” Grade 5 learner, Mzamomhle Primary
“No marking for teachers and teachers can see where the problem areas are, therefore the problems are immediately addressed.” - Grade 6 Teacher at Jamaica Way Primary
By completing assessments, teachers are able to not only monitor their learners’ progress each term, but they are also able to identify problem areas. They can then address these problem areas and see a greater shift in their learners’ results. Thank you for your donations and the part you play in helping learners take ownership of their learning and in turn, help them take ownership of their future.
