Sri Arunodayam is a home to mentally challenged abandoned children. Founded in 2002, Sri Arunodayam is a registered charitable trust. Recognized as a reception unit by the Government of Tamil Nadu, Sri Arunodayam provides care, shelter and rehabilitation for mentally challenged children who have been abandoned by their biological families.
In India, due to poverty, lack of awareness and lack of access to resources, parents abandon their mentally challenged children. All these children in the home are abandoned in public places such as bus stations, railway stations and hospitals. With the support of the Social Welfare Department and child welfare committees Sri Arunodayam admits them in the home, provides medical attention, care, protection and rehabilitation. Presently 100 children are under our care of Sri Arunodayam
Many NGOs in Tamil Nadu cater to mentally challenged. They function as day centers or as support services for the family to share issue of bringing up a mentally challenged child. Sri Arunodayam is one among the very few homes that accommodates abandoned children who are mentally challenged and spastic. Since these children are deserted by the parents the total responsibility of providing food, accommodation, medical care, education and training and rehabilitation rests with Sri Arunodayam.
Sri Arunodayam strives to ensure that all the mentally challenged children should be safe and enjoy equal opportunities within their ambit.
