Progress Report- Third Quarter 2022 : Justice for Human Trafficking Victims in Thailand

LIFT's team works tirelessly because we want to see Freedom through Justice. We are inspired by hope as we see the rapid and positive changes.

From July to September, our efforts produced many good results. LIFT's assistance to many survivors has proved that hard work pays off in freedom for the exploited. Your generosity allowed us to provide 768 support activities to survivors, exceeding our year’s goal. Moreover, LIFT's legal team demonstrated their expertise in the prosecution assistance provided to ten girls who were removed from sexual trafficking. The compensation ordered was the highest in LIFT history, totaling 84,862 NZD (1,840,000 THB) in cash for the survivors. We would like to thank our entire team for their efforts in identifying, protecting, and prosecuting offenders.

Organisationally, we are also steadily growing because we believe in making a long-term difference in the lives of survivors. Some highlights for this quarter include:

THB 1.9 M (approx USD 53k / NZD 89.5k) of compensation for thirty three victims. In addition, eight offenders have now been arrested and sentenced to 16 years imprisonment for their crimes.

LIFT assisted law enforcement in removing 33 victims from harm and 9 cases this quarter in identifying a potential victim. The intelligence and investigative team gathered critical information for 52 disseminated reports, ensuring victims will be saved and offenders must be held accountable for their crimes.

768 support activities to survivors were provided by our social workers and legal experts. Both teams work together to ensure that victims are not re-traumatized during the prosecution process.

LIFT's social workers provided training on social media safety use to one hundred twenty- five participants in collaboration with partners. They also visited twenty-nine survivors, provided counselling, and conducted one-on-one assessments to assist survivors in making long-term plans. 31 Love Packs, representing our love and care, were distributed to our survivors.

To complete this mission, our team had to commit their high responsibility and dedication. However, we are so proud to be a part of changing the world, assisting people in breaking free from the oppression of human trafficking. Your support and partnership in this work are greatly appreciated!

Progress report for LIFT International, Semi-Annual Report 2022

LIFT International continued to perform anti-human trafficking operations in Thailand which included investigations, prosecutions and aftercare support to identified victims.

Investigation work was driven by analysis conducted by LIFT’s analysts who conducted public online searches for potential offences, in addition to reviewing information and tips from partners and other stakeholders. LIFT provided technical support to and collaborated with law enforcement to take human trafficking cases forward.

Analytical work, along with ongoing support, allowed strong collaboration between anti-human trafficking law enforcement partners and LIFT to identify and assist victims, and identify and arrest offenders. During the first six months of 2022, 49 intelligence products were disseminated to partners to facilitate casework, twenty-seven deployments were conducted to support anti-human trafficking efforts, and one terminations were conducted which resulted in the successful removal of six victims from harm and arrest of three offenders.

Through June 2022, LIFT supported in the securing of three convictions against trafficking offenders which totalled 21 years of jail time for them and about 20,000 USD in compensation ordered. Finally, LIFT’s aftercare team, consisting of social workers, supported LIFT’s investigators and law enforcement to ensure the victim’s safety and welfare were considered first and foremost once they were identified. Further, the aftercare team worked closely with private and public shelters to provide basic services and to identify the victim and survivor’s specific needs. During the first six months of 2022, LIFT’s aftercare team supported 47 survivors, which included the provision of 25 lovepacks, counselling, updates on their cases and referral support.

LIFT International continued to perform anti-human trafficking operations in Thailand which included investigations, prosecutions and aftercare support to identified victims. Investigation work was driven by analysis conducted by LIFT’s analysts who conducted public online searches for potential offenses, in addition to reviewing information and tips from partners and other stakeholders. LIFT provided technical support to and collaborated with law enforcement to take human trafficking cases forward. Analytical work, along with ongoing support, allowed strong collaboration between anti-human trafficking law enforcement partners and LIFT to identify and assist victims, and identify and arrest offenders. During the last three months of 2021, 60 intelligence products were disseminated to partners to facilitate casework, eight deployments were conducted to support anti-human trafficking efforts, and two terminations were conducted which resulted in the successful removal of four victims from harm and arrest of three offenders.

Prosecution work included legal support to victims of human trafficking, where LIFT’s legal counsel stayed with the victim and built relationships with them to build their confidence and gain their trust in order to testify against offenders in court, in addition to providing direct support to public prosecutors. LIFT’s legal counsel also filed compensation claims for victims to ensure restitution was provided for their ordeal. During the last three months of 2021, LIFT supported in the securing of three convictions against trafficking offenders which totalled 61 years of jail time for them and 100,000 THB (about 3,000 USD) in compensation ordered. Finally, LIFT’s aftercare team, consisting of social workers, supported LIFT’s investigators and law enforcement to ensure the victim’s safety and welfare were considered first and foremost once they were identified. Further, the aftercare team worked closely with private and public shelters to provide basic services and to identify the victim and survivor’s specific needs. During the last three months of 2021, LIFT’s aftercare team supported 15 survivors, which included the provision of 16 lovepacks, counselling, updates on their cases and referral support.
