The culmination of our Independence project is of course the PIP annual residential holiday.
It did not disappoint! All of the PIP students had a super time, a relaxing break in the fresh air, a chance to make friends and have fun whilst practicing all of those skills they learn at PIP everyday.
Meet Ryan. Ryan is on the autistic spectrum. He is a friendly young man who is very able academically. He understands a great deal, yet like many who come to PIP he struggles with communication. His speech is limited and he gets frustrated, especially when it is particularly noisy and his senses are "busy".
This was a first for Ryan and his family. Ryan has never been away from his family, and Ryan's family have never been away from Ryan. He flourished in the relaxed, yet structured environment of the holiday. He loved the boat trips and feeling the breeze on his face. He loved the climbing wall and zoomed straight to the top calcualting his route carefully but without hesitation. The pictures and film of Ryan floating in a swinging harness are absolutely amazing. His face says it all.
Ryan's mum said on his return, that she totally relaxed for the first time since Ryan's birth. Those four days of recuperation were so valuable.
The group is now back, and in the throws of the pre-Christmas term. We use the excitement of the holidays to inspire our students to learn even more. Our healthy cooking sessions are going from strength to strength and with the over indulgences of Christmas it's a great opportunity to talk about making healthy choices and limiting those treat days!
This week on #GivingTuesday, a local company have gifted a Christmas tree and we are waiting for it's surprise arrival. Students have crafted decorations and are practicing their christmas carols and songs. Small gestures mean an awful lot and all culminate in our students becoming more independent members of society.
Thank you for your support so far, we urge you to keep giving to PIP so that more students can have a "first" like Ryan!
