Help Learning Disabled Adults Gain Independence

PIP is a very busy place at the moment. Our academic timetable commenced in September, and we're working with a number of disabled adults new to PIP, as well as supporting those who have been with us for some time.

During the summer, PIP took part in the Cultural Olympiad, delivering a fantastic drama performance accompanied by a live orchestra!  'Journey of the Torch' told the tale of how the Olympic torch travelled from Athens to London.  Told through the eyes of our wonderfully creative disabled adults, it was the first time our Theatre Company performed to live music, and they responded with their usual creativity and originality! 

PIP is also having fundraising event in late October.  The first PIP Mountain Bike Challenge will be a beautiful 18 mile ride through the (potentially muddy) trails of the Chiltern Valley and along the Thames River.  Based at a local micro brewery in Henley-on-Thames, the event promises to be a great day out, with a BBQ for all involved finishing the day.  It's a great opportunity to contribute to a worthy cause and help out on the day.  Donations are always welcome, and if anyone would like to contribute on the day, please contact PIP.

Finally, PIP's annual trip to the working farm in Somerset approaches quickly.  Our disabled students are getting increasingly excited about feeding the animals, harvesting the apples, and spending a week in a new and exciting rural environment.  Final preparations are under way and we look forward to offering disabled adults new and exciting opportunities on the farm in Somerset!

 Hello PIP Friends, Family & Supporters-

In a flash, July is upon us-we're past the halfway mark of 2012, and PIP has already had a full, eventful and exciting year. The remainder of 2012 promises to have many more opportunities, fun and developments. 

Our Arts and Disability Project is in full swing, providing opportunities for disabled adults to express themselves, develop confidence, and promote their creativity.  We're having an early showcase event on Mon 16 July, where students will showcase 'PIP's Explosive Experimental Cube'.  In early October, PIP students will be hosting an event displaying all their artwork from their module with ActionSpace artist Charlotte Hollinshead

In other news, our Technology Group is in the midst of a 10 week original music production workshop with CREATE+.  Students use Apple's Garage Band app to create new rhythms, and mix instruments with vocals.  PIP students have been putting Lady Gaga to shame with their vocals, rapping, and jamming skills!

With the end of the academic year approaching, PIP is holding its annual awards day on 25 July.  We're pleased to announce that PIP is handing our more 25 ASDAN accredited awards in Personal & Social Development and Towards Independence Modules. 

Students are looking forward to a busy leisure programme during August.  Highlights scheduled are a visit to Kentish Town Farm, flora and fauna exploration at Kew Gardens, and a visit to the British Library to see the History of the Olympics Exhibition. 

Of course, with the Olympics in London, we're playing our role by participating in a number of cultural and sporting activities.   Towards the end of the summer, students are very excited to be attending the Paralympics- we have a whole week of Paralympics tickets, including Judo, equestrian, wheelchair basketball and fencing.   

On 1st September PIP Theatre Company will be performing 'Journey of the Torch' - a music and drama performance featuring in Cool Fusion's Cultural Olympiad Event. The performance will showcase the inimitable talents of PIP Theatre Company members and is the culmination of a series of workshops with composer Andy Bungay, writer Linda Redshaw and drama therapists Rebecca Blake and Alison Singleton. As a small charity PIP faces challenging times. We need the community's support more than ever.  PIP's highly personal and dedicated support enables vulnerable adults with learning disabilities to achieve their potential.  By promoting independence and choice, disabled adults can become active members of the community.
