Kakuma Girls, Kenya Need Support to Stay in School

By Ugbede-Ojo Dominic Kadiri | Project Leader

Dear Donors,

We sincerely thank all our donors for their kindness and support toward the Help Kenya Girls with Bikes and One Year of School project. Your generosity is greatly appreciated and gives hope to vulnerable girls in Kakuma who continue to face barriers to education.

From our recent needs assessment, we found that Junior Secondary School fees from JSS 1 to JSS 3 cost about 6,000 Kenyan shillings per term (about $47), while the average cost of a bicycle is about 16,000 Kenyan shillings (about $130). These findings helped us better understand the financial challenges many families are facing in keeping girls in school.

While we are grateful for the support received so far, much more support is still needed to fully carry out this important and impactful project.

Many girls in Kakuma continue to walk long and unsafe distances to school, often without proper learning materials or menstrual hygiene support. Poverty, displacement, emotional stress, and fear of harassment remain major reasons many girls miss classes or drop out completely.

This project is designed to provide bicycles, reusable sanitary pads, school materials, school fee support, mental health support, and peer safety sessions for 500 vulnerable girls. Local mentors will also help guide and support the girls throughout the program.

With the right support, more girls can attend school regularly, remain safer during daily travel, reduce school absenteeism, and continue their education with greater confidence and stability.

We remain deeply grateful for the donations received so far and hopeful that additional support will help us move forward with implementation.

Thank you once again for your kindness and continued support.

Sincerely,

Joy Ojochogwu Etubi
Project Leader
