In Kakuma, rural Kenya, many girls face long walks to school, low attendance, and emotional stress due to poverty and displacement. This project will provide bicycles, reusable sanitary pads, school materials, and pay one year of primary school fees for 500 young girls in need. It will also include basic mental health support and education on how to protect themselves from sexual harassment, through peer sessions and trained local mentors, helping girls stay safe and focused on their studies.
Girls in Kakuma face several challenges that stop them from attending and completing primary school. Many have to walk long distances over difficult terrain, which can be unsafe and tiring. Lack of transport, inadequate menstrual hygiene products, and fear of harassment make it harder for girls to stay in school. Additionally, emotional stress from poverty and displacement affects their ability to focus and succeed in their education.
The project will provide 500 girls in Kakuma with bicycles to reduce long walking distances and improve daily school attendance. Each girl will also receive reusable sanitary pads and school materials to help them stay in class throughout the year. School fees will be paid to remove the financial burden on families. Also, trained local mentors will offer mental health support and hold peer sessions on how to stay safe from harassment, helping the girls feel more secure and focused in school.
By reducing daily stress and removing common barriers to education, this project will help more girls in Kakuma stay in school and complete their primary education. With bicycles, school fees covered, and regular support, the girls are more likely to continue learning and avoid early marriage or dropping out. Over time, this can lead to more women in the community gaining basic education, increasing their chances for further learning, safer choices, and better income opportunities in the future.
